Does Modesty in Dress Really Matter?

by Asher Witmer  - December 19, 2016

A few things stick out to me about our discussions on modesty. First of all, modesty is played out in many areas of life, not just dress. Because of overemphasis on the dress-side of modesty, people have started dealing with the broader areas of modesty in life, which is good. However, if we’re not careful, we can begin subconsciously believing modesty in dress doesn’t really matter.

Does modesty in dress matter? That is the first question we need to answer.

Secondly, dress is very personal matter. We should be respectful as we discuss how others dress and careful not to put our opinions or personal preferences on others.

Lastly, something I notice in our discussions is that when we talk about being visually aroused and the need to watch how we dress so we are not needlessly causing arousal people seem to confuse lust with arousal. Just because someone is aroused doesn’t mean they are lusting or sinning.

In other words, you being aroused by the way I dress isn’t necessarily your personal problem.

God made men (and women, actually) to be aroused by sight. He designed people to be aroused. No matter how holy and pure a person is there will still be arousal if they see certain parts of the human body. That is another issue we need to acknowledge in our discussions on modesty.

So, without further a due here’s to 2016’s seventh most-read post: A Discussion on Modesty.

Question: What do you think. . . does modesty in dress matter? Share in the comments.
